What Feeds Your Soul?


I'm not talking about indulging in an extra scoop of ice cream "because it's good for the soul". But if not something that a simple dessert can fix, what do we do when we feel the ultimately inevitable burnout?


I've been asking myself too frequently lately, "Am I tired, or am I uninspired?" When we get into the routine of the day to day, even when we are kicking our discipline into high-gear to reach the goals we set for ourselves, it can start to feel heavy and mundane.


It's true that exercise and good nutrition can support better mental health but naturally, we are going to feel the desire to change our routine at some point. After all, variety is the spice of life for a reason.


Here are some tricks to fight burnout and stick to your goals:

  1. Change up your program phase. It can be that simple! It's better to change phases in your programming a week early than to dread that same workout routine you've been doing for the last month. That mental battle of "I have to do this no matter how I feel" can burn you out and cause you to eventually attach negative connotations to exercise, or procrastinate your workout. Building progress by elevating to your next phase can make you feel strong, confident and switch up the routine enough to keep the dread away.

  2. Settle in new surroundings. Changing where you work, exercise or eat can put a fresh spin on something otherwise familiar. Try the gym on the other side of town, move outside, or from the basement to the living room.

  3. Try a group class or new form of movement. You'll never know if you like something until you try it; so join the spin class, learn to surf, try out some YouTube yoga, or maybe relive your childhood with a jump rope and hula-hoop. Any (safe) movement is good movement, so give something new a try!
